Why Cross Training Matters: Try a New Style Week at LDP

At Leighton Dance Project, we believe growth as a dancer doesn’t come from staying in one lane—it comes from exploring, expanding, and challenging yourself in new ways. That’s why we’re so excited about Try a New Style Week!
This special week gives dancers the chance to step outside their comfort zones and take class in a new style with a new teacher. Not only is it fun to try something different, but it’s also an incredibly important part of developing as a strong, versatile, and confident dancer.
Why Cross Training Is So Important
Cross-training in dance means training in multiple styles—not just your main focus. Even if your passion is tap, ballet, or contemporary, taking classes in other genres supports and elevates your artistry in powerful ways:
  • Strength & Technique: Ballet builds strength and alignment that improves every style. Hip hop sharpens precision, speed, and rhythm. Contemporary encourages creativity and freedom in movement. Each style brings tools you can use everywhere.
  • Musicality & Timing: Learning choreography in different styles teaches dancers to hear music in new ways, strengthening rhythm, phrasing, and adaptability.
  • Versatility & Performance Quality: Dancers who cross train become more versatile performers—ready to jump into any choreography, performance, or audition.
  • Injury Prevention: Training different muscles in different ways balances the body, helps prevent overuse, and creates stronger, healthier dancers.
  • Confidence & Creativity: Stepping into a new style can feel uncomfortable at first, but it builds confidence and helps dancers unlock new ways of moving, performing, and expressing themselves.
The LDP Difference
At LDP, we don’t just teach steps—we build well-rounded artists. Our core belief is that every style supports the others, and dancers who are open to new experiences grow the fastest. Try a New Style Week is a perfect opportunity to explore without pressure, connect with new teachers, and discover just how much your dancing can expand.

So whether you’re in a ballet class curious about hip hop, a tap dancer ready to take on contemporary, or a jazz dancer dipping your toes into ballet, this week is for you!
Come ready to step out of your comfort zone—you might just discover your new favorite style.
