How Should Your Dancer’s Costume Fit?

Dance costumes are intended to be “fitted”. The function of dancewear, in general, is to allow the shapes of the dancer to be clearly seen. A costume that is too loose, baggy or long can hinder the dancer’s ability to move as well as the performance. Costumes that have a base leotard should almost fit like a “second skin”, and they often contain Lycra which will stretch with the dancer’s movements. Young dancers often feel like their costume is “too tight” because they are used to their clothing having “growing room” and being a bit more roomy. Dance costumes are sized based on the measurements taken so that the costume will “fit” the dancer appropriately.
Remember that no undergarments should show under dance costumes.  For costumes that have a built-in leotard, underwear is really not necessary – especially for younger dancers. We should not see panty lines, hanging underwear, bra straps or prints under costumes. We want your dancers to look their very best, and feel good about what they are wearing so they can shine on stage!
